I loved the first volume of Umbrella Academy. The characters were quirky, the story was weird and wild and it was just fresh. The second volume was okay, still decent, but the freshness had worn off a bit. The story was still quirky and the characters continued to be development. With this volume, I feel like Gerard Way put the brakes on the character development (of the Umbrella Academy) to instead focus on building out the greater universe. The Academy members really are secondary to the side story of the Hotel residents. The new characters are creative and quirky, but I feel like the cost of introducing those characters was minimalizing the page time/story time of the Academy members. Here's some general feedback:1. This is the 3rd volume in the series.2. This is the first volume since the Netflix series launched.3. As other reviewers noted, the "Netflix sticker" is actually printed on the cover and not a sticker at all.4. The art is solid and the new characters are fun and creative.5. The extras are cool showing original sketchs, character development and notes on characters.6. The introduction is provided by Jeff Lemire (you need to be reading his stuff!!!). It's pretty typical.7. As mentioned, the story really minimizes the Academy members and instead focuses on the secondary characters (Hotel residents) and building out the Gerard Way universe. I am not opposed to this as this is a page from Jeff Lemire's book Black Hammer. The difference being that Lemire only references (with minimal cameos) side characters and then highlights them in a separate book. He keeps Black Hammer about the core group. That's where this volume misses the mark.As the 'headline' mentions, I believe that any Umbrella Academy is better than no Umbrella Academy. I still hold to that, but this is definitely not my favorite example. In fact, this is easily my least favorite. Having said that, I would still recommend the entire series to new readers. It's fun, quirky and off the beaten path, I was super excited to receive this and have been waiting a very long time and I was very disappointed to find the netflix original sticker printed onto the book. The other two don't and it kind of runs the collection to have netflix branding the books.
